What is the Living Lab?
The MCI Living Lab connects patients, clinical care, biospecimens and health data to create a shared platform for respiratory research.

Research is integrated into normal care environment.

Contribution can support more than one research question.

Samples and data can continue to generate value over time.
What Makes the MCI Living Lab Different?
More Than a Traditional Biobank

Traditional biobank
Sample → stored → used for a specific study

MCI Living Lab
Patient → longitudinal clinical care → samples + data → multiple research opportunities → benefits → new discoveries
Designed Around Patients
Research is embedded in clinical care.
Longitudinal — participants can contribute over time
Cross-disease — connects multiple respiratory clinics & programs
Patient-informed — patient perspectives help shape research priorities
One participant becomes part of something much larger

A Growing Research Community
250+ participants enrolled directly in the MCI Living Lab
~1,000 additional participants connected through collaborating biobanks and data resources
AIRS Network: connecting the Living Lab to a broader provincial respiratory research network
What are participants helping us study?
COPD · Asthma
Tuberculosis · ICU infections
Life span · Precision sleep apnea treatment
Vaping · Environmental exposures
ILD · Cystic fibrosis
AI-enabled detection of lung disease · Prediction modeling
Why this matters
From Participation to Impact
One Patient → Many Discoveries → Better Care

By participating in the MCI Living Lab, patients become part of a research effort that extends beyond a clinic visit.
We are building sustainable infrastructure that can support many investigators across many respiratory diseases and, ultimately, many future patients.
Possible Benefits to Participants
There is no direct medical benefit from participating in the Living Lab Biobank. However, your participation may create opportunities to become involved in future research.

Stay connected to research
Living Lab participants may be contacted about new research studies or clinical trials for which they may be eligible.

Opportunities to participate
Some studies may offer access to new approaches to prevention, diagnosis, monitoring, or treatment. Participation in any future study is always optional and requires separate consent.

Help improve future care
By contributing samples and health information, you help researchers better understand respiratory disease and develop new ways to improve care for future patients.
